Not to belabor the point, but I did find my reference. The following appeared in America's Civil War Magazine, July 2004, on page 32: "Lincoln would not have had a second term. Lincoln had been nominated in June, not as a Republican but on something styled the Union ticket, indicating that the hearts and minds of the North remained unsure of the war's outcome."

This was in the article "A Near Miss in Washington" by B. Franklin Cooling.
