At least three of the deserters executed this day at Vicksburg had been captured from the gunboat Indianola.

The late Professor William Douglas Taylor, Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, Tn, in his book, A Fit Representation of Pandemonium, East Tennessee Confederate Soldiers in the Campaign for Vicksburg, Mercer University Press, Macon, Georgia, 2008, pp. 145/6, makes note "One can imagine their horror at being pulled from the water by their ex-comrades aboard the Webb and Queen of the West as the Indianola was sinking."

"The bodies of the men executed on 6 March are buried in the Confederate Section of Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg, identified only by regiments, date, and as 'Unknown" soldiers.'"

By the way, this is an excellently researched and well written tome.
