You're welcome, George. To Joe and Miles; it was not my intent to condemn the enlisted deserters en masse, though I did know one who went to Sweden during Viet Nam, out of pure cowardice. My purpose was to explain the facts to Ms. Holley, as she did seem to be denigrating the actions of officers who resigned to follow their states, or their consciouses. Lee agonized over his service to the army as opposed to his loyalty to Virginia. I believe if Virginia had stayed in the Union his choice would have been different. People unfamiliar with the period do not understand the state loyalty these men had. The 18th Georgia, with whom my family served, was transferred from the Texas Brigade to be placed with Toombs' fellow Georgians after Antietam, as part of a general reorganization for the purpose of having state units serve together.
