Dennis, I think you are correct about him being that Wolfe, who also wrote "Look Homeward, Angel." Interestingly Wolfe, who was only 38 or so when he died, is buried in Ashville, NC in the same cemetery as another great writer--O. Henry. I remember driving with the wife and kids through the desert on the way to see rels in Texas and listening to hours of O. Henry short stories on tape.

Faulkner called himself the second-best writer of his generation--after Wolfe.
