I have a copy of a letter written by Stephen R. Mallory regarding the use of his slaves. During the construction of Barrancas and the Redoubt and Ft.Jefferson the govt. leased slaves from individuals. This was of course, before Sumter. Mallory was not happy they took his slaves that far away so he couldn't monitor their welfare. Will try to post it tomorrow.
