Re: Texas Secession---a degree of difference

"Was Georgia, or the other seceding states going to then take the place of the Government forces to help out Texas with Indians or banditry?"

Kevin, I'm not a texan, but I an a Georgian. We did help out back then. Lucius Q. C. Lamar, the first President of Texas, was from Georgia. A Boring was at Bexar, in 1836. The 18th Georgia, my relatives' unit in the WBTS, was in the Texas Brigade ubtil after Antietam. Recently, I had relatives in Texas, but they all have passed away. General Twiggs said he had 2600 men, and two light batteries of artillery. Stretched over the number of camps and forts in the state, they were spread very thinly, giving some credence to Texas' complaints. The Frontier Batallion of the Texas Rangers probably provided as much real protection as the Federal infantry, being mounted and experienced in Indian fighting. Perhaps Texas felt it could best help itself with a cohesive force. Stan
