McPherson,- yes I agree.

Bruce Catton did some great early work, but I'll never forgive him for the 100 year anniversary book by American Heritage "The Civil War". I wished I owned an original, it was my first source book of the war when I was ten years old, but historically it isn't worth the paper its written on. I keep a copy as a reminder about what set me on the quest for answers and an example of how not to publish a military history book. This book never gave much credit to the South, and, represented Confederate military victories as Northern ones. It was very confusing to me as to who the Confederates were, why they attacked Fort Sumter, and why the heck they were always losing battles. The Union Army was always on the side of good and militarily invincible in this book.
