In Response To: VT Troups in TN ()

There was a lot of activity by Union troops in Tennesse. For example, they burned at least 11 courthouses. I have not cataloged how many towns and churches were burned and pillaged, but in August 1862, all but 4 buildings were destroyed in Dover after a skirmish between yankee soldiers and Confederate partisans. This was a common practice when yankees held the field of battle.....to punish loyal civilians. There can never be a true reckoning in this world for all the murders, let alone destruction of property. If you want to learn of "Union activity" in Tennesse, you have your work cut out for you. You might start with a google search for Col. Fielding Hurst, 6th TN Cavalry, U.S. Check out Purdy and Jackson, TN.
