I'm working from high school history memory here, so bear with me. Someone can research this. Transport taxes (read: railroad tarriffs)were unfairly heavy on agricultural products, which is what the South shipped during reconstruction. This went on until the midwestern states began to be settled in the 1870s and 80s. Those farmers had not lost a war; indeed, some had fought on the winning side. They complained until the taxes were equalized. This may also have figured into the James boys' penchant for robbing trains. Stan
