Re: The threat of secession
In Response To: Re: The threat of secession ()

Careful, Chief; you are about to start an argument! When I was fifteen the doctor who had delivered me at home, within yards of the Marietta National Cemetery and a few miles from the Confederate Cemetery, told me I had to stop drinking tea or coffee with sugar in it, if I expected to join the Navy (A life long dream). Three years later I was sworn in. As it happened, his son delivered my daughter, albeit in a hospital. Now, how Southern is that? LOL As most of y'all know, my GGF and two great uncles were in Co. A, 18th Ga. Infantry, ANV. My GGF died at Seven Pines; the other two were captured in 1864. My family had not owned any slaves since the 1820s. They fought because their State was going to war. I'm sure there were "elites" on both sides who felt the cause of the war was slavery, and many others whose reasons were different, as George said. The image of the Mobius Loop, endless and twisted so it can never be straitened out, is a good analogy for the circular discussions we often find ourselves in. I agree with General Gordon; slavery was perhaps the biggest tree in the forest, but certainly not the only one. Stan
