Re: The threat of secession
In Response To: Re: The threat of secession ()

The slavery secession movement did not offer a bright future nor guarantee protection to the fragile institution of slavery. If the plan was to protect the right to slavery then the act of secession was the worst idea. How could seven small states protect that instituion surrounded by overwhelming powers that were soon to be against it? The safest guarantee was to stay with their sister states under the U.S. Constitution and hang on to what ever rights they had left. Within the U.S. those slave states would have a guaranteed local market for their products.

If secession was peaceful and allowed to proceed without interference, those seven states, Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Florida would not be able to control slavery alone. They would be subject to high Tarriffs for their now foreign made goods and would have to compete with the rest of the world. Their sister slave states in the U.S. would not be allowed to give aid and without a large slave state representation in the U.S. Government, they would witness the loss of slave power and the right of slavery removed from that nation. They would have been an island of slaves in the middle of a sea of free nations with very poor owners, and the rest of the white population finding other places to live. This they had to have seen. So why secede?
