If secession was peaceful and allowed to proceed without interference, those seven states, Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Florida would not be able to control slavery alone. They would be subject to high Tarriffs for their now foreign made goods and would have to compete with the rest of the world. Their sister slave states in the U.S. would not be allowed to give aid and without a large slave state representation in the U.S. Government, they would witness the loss of slave power and the right of slavery removed from that nation. They would have been an island of slaves in the middle of a sea of free nations with very poor owners, and the rest of the white population finding other places to live. This they had to have seen. So why secede?
