Stephens, Davis and the others were quite saavy. They knew that having championed slavery would not look good through the lens of historical hindsight so they started spinning it as soon as the guns fell silent. It is often said that the winners write the history, but in the case of the Civil War the losers went through a lot of ink and were largely successful for a long time.
