The South had other options too.

I don't understand why the Southern growers didn't embargo cotton, since all the disgust over the tariffs on exporting the stuff to Europe. They could just as well have stopped growing cotton, not send any out to the North, or England/France, and THEN see if the European countries would bring political pressure to bear on the Federal Gov. to work something out about the tariff issue.

They (the South) was willing to embargo their cotton in 61-63 in hopes of pressuring England/France into recognizing them, (the King Cotton Diplomacy fiasco) why not have tried that BEFORE the shooting started?
