Continued existence of the CSA....

I've enjoyed reading the discussions on this forum (even the heated ones.......certainly no more or less vigorous than those of the era) about the causes of secession and TWBS.

There are certainly others with more background and time spent in analysis than myself, from whom I'd like more information, or direction on where to find more information or writings from the era about southern perspective.

I've recently been studying the writings of Lunt, Hunter, and Maj. Gen. Gordon about reasons for secession. Specifically, I'd like to know if their were writings from the era projecting what the environment was predicted to be for the CSA had their not been this immediate destructive and prolonged war.

The southern states seceded from the union and established a government and an army because they felt their was no redress from the constitution and system of government which heretofore they had been a part. Was there a belief that the CSA and the USA could/would co-exist as hostile nations?

I'm certainly interested in current opinions, but perhaps more interested in the mindset of that era.

Thanks
