War was not the way to go. The E.P. made the war last longer than it should. Reconstruction doubled the amount of time that American Blacks would be refused their civil rights. The aggressive nature of the Republicans and Abolitionist pushed the South away from emancipation instead of towards it.

Its a shame the war occured when it did. The Southern middle class was getting a toe hold, and was having an effect, although small, on the slave institutions in the urban South. Artisans and skilled workers were coming up in the cities South, and was just beginning to spread to the rural areas. These workers were instrumental in banning slave labor in their market. The modern age was changing the economic markets, with machines and engines that would out perform slave labor easily, but it came too late to stop the war.
