Botts held political beliefs in line with those of Henry Clay and his disciple Abraham Lincoln, so his statements are readily understood.

In 1859-60 many Southern Whigs considered abolitionists and secessionists to be allies working for the same political goals. If you're interested I will quote from Alabama news editorials of that period.
