You are forgetting an important event prior to the election of 1860 which changed the thinking of many people, North and South. Its 150th anniversary will be the occasion of much commentary next fall. If it had not happened, Southern state legislatures would not have had a reason to organize and arm their militia during the twelve-month period which ended with the secession of South Carolina.
