Here's why Harpers Ferry was symbolic.

For a significant part of the Northern public, it represented their highest aspirations. For Southerners, this second act of terrorism -- planned, armed and funded by wealthy, influential abolitionists -- made their trajectory quite plain. These New Englanders wanted nothing less than the complete and bloody overthrow of all Southern society.

That's what Harpers Ferry symbolized.
