By "national" I must assume that you mean states north of the Mason-Dixon line. I've been reading Southern newspapers printed during the election campaign of 1860 for some time now, and the Republican Party gets mentioned just slightly more than the Green Party is today.

As you know, Lincoln received the nomination over William H. Seward, considered the favorite and better known of the two politicians.

In 1860 newspapers frequently printed important speeches in complete form. For instance, Lincoln's first inaugural speech appeared in many Alabama newspapers, not what one might expect.
