Alan, While only peripherally pertinent to your post, I highly recommend the book "Mountain Myth - Unionism in Western North Carolina" by Terrell T. Garren (2006). That's one heck of an interesting read. If you ever get the chance, take a look at it; he makes some fascinating and credible observations.
