I find Sherman taking harsh actions AFTER the boats were fired upon...You berate Sherman's actions, but not those who's actions are more cowardly...easy to hide and shoot, then run, leaving the consequenses to those that live there.
As Sherman said...

"I would make this war as severe as possible, and show no symptoms of tiring till the South begs for mercy."
"If the people raise a great howl against my barbarity and cruelty, I will answer that war is war, and not popularity seeking."

You would never have convinced him otherwise.
