George Caleb Bingham – the fighting artist – was among the first to enlist for the Union in that area. Later he served as a Captain under Maj Van Horn, but he is best known for his art. He believed Order No 11 was cruel and inhumane and called for it’s withdrawal. He fought it but lost as we well know.

Many believe he used his art to end Ewing’s political career before it began with the painting of Order No 11 and the Sartain engraving. Ewing lost the governorship of Ohio. Bingham devoted his talents and energy to what he believed to be the cause of justice.
