Yes, exactly - various individuals & groups (whether loosely associated or tightly knit) supporting without understanding its effect and also without necessarily giving any regard to others' reasons for supporting the same cause. While a multiplicity of reasons/causes for an historical event may have an overall impact both on one another and on the event itself, they often occur without any actual overt complicity. At other times, these reasons for support may overlap to some extend and make it very difficult to neatly categorize them, as has been too often attempted by even the most well intentioned scholars. I would add that to attempt to prioritize the reasons for support of a cause too often leads to oversimplification - the direct opposite of both of these terms.
