It looks like there was a big search to prove the letters accuracy back in 1925. The New York Times archives have several articles on it. The original letter was destroyed, according to family members, by the mother. Robert T. Lincoln is reported as saying he never knew of the letter. It was found the number of sons that died was incorrect. No articles prior to 1921 on Mrs. Bixby's letter show up in the archives.
