Re: Butler and the 1864 Election

The claim was there was a secret army of secessionist going to attack the polls and any non-Democrat attempting to vote. Butler was sent from Washington to New York with outside Federal troops to protect the election...Never mind General Dix and his federal troops were on Long Island, (he wasn't trusted to be able to perform guard duty on the polling places). As you can see, Butler marched in a pushed aside all state control over a state election with Federal troops.
