Colonel Thomas reluctantly agreed to lay down his arms. The Civil War was over, but the last shots in North Carolina had been fired in Waynesville.

A very good decision on Colonel Thomas part. What was the point of capturing Bartlett's men? The next day or so he would have faced Kirk's entire regiment and if...word being if...they beat Kirk they would have to deal with regiments on their way to Asheville, a whole yankee division with another one in Knoxville.
