Chief, was the Sheriff any kin to Robert Duvall, the actor? I've heard he had Confederate kinfolk. And I wonder if Ward Bond's character in "Tap Roots" was based on Newt Knight. Knight, as written, not necessarily as lived, would be a director's dream. Large, well built, apparently fearless, and certainly ruthless. His penchant for bigamy and miscegnation would add spice to the mix, especially if his mixed progeny married each other. In post war Mmississippi, that might be the most believable part of the story.
