I agree about Lincoln. But, I am not talking about Lincoln. I am talking about a nation and a people their ideal of themselves.

I believe that Lincoln simply played upon a popular sentiment to his benefit to win that election. We are not so unlike them today. We still believe in the greatness of this nation and do not wish to see it destroyed now do we? So it is not hard to imagine a nation in trumoil that would turn to a person who held out the hope of unity.
