The expansion of the United States is a moral complexity for me. I am proud of my pioneering ancestors and the fact that millions of people benefited greatly, but the end is somewhat tarnished by the means. It seems the brutality of the western Indian wars were a lot easier to sell to Americans after the United States won a bloody war of attrition against the Confederate States. Some might call that Manifest Destiny. If so, I hate it.
