As you probably understand, slave ownership had nothing to do with a man's feeling of loyalty to the United States. Many Kentuckians and Tennesseans who served in the Federal army owned slaves. Also, significant numbers of large planters (100 slaves or more) worked hard to keep their states in the Union.
