Alan, as you no doubt are aware, William T. Wofford, of Cassville, Georgia, was a delegate to the secession convention, and voted against secession. He had been a Captain in the Mexican War, serving with distinction. However, when the vote at the convention was for secession, he returned home and raised a regiment. He later was Brigadier of his own brigade. In 1864, he was at home recuperating from a wound. Gov. Brown named him commander of the North Gerogia District in January 1865. President Davis denied his request to have his brigade sent to Georgia. He organized the various deserters, bushwhackers and other detached troops into a viable command of between four and seven thousand men. He arranged with his Union counterpart to distribute food and forage to the civilian population He did not surrender his command until May, 1865, at Kingston, Georgia. He returned home and became a planter and lawyer. Stan
