Hi Jamie,

You struck a real chord (or is it cord?) with your mention of "Drums in the Deep South." I saw that movie on L.A. TV about 50 years ago and all I remembered were Guy Madison and that fanciful Lookout Mtn-style cannon barrage. Saw it recently and really enjoyed it after all these years. It contains some weird elements of high-class and no-class, which I find intriguing. For example, the score was written by Dmitri Tiomkin (none better in my view), and Menzies the director was very good. I liked that long artistic lead in to the plantation at the very beginning which seems almost cartoon-like. Also, the ingenue, Barbara Payton, was a real knockout in her day, but was one of the saddest H'wood self-destruction stories you will ever hear (check her out in wikipedia). I always liked Guy Madison, no great actor, to be sure, and his pal Jingles if you want to get right down to it. All in all, I think this movie is probably under-rated. At any case, it's extremely watchable and entertaining. I hate crummy model work though, which killed a lot of 1930-50s vintage aviation movies for me. But that's an off-topic story, and one I won't bore anyone with.....

Mike
