Could Lee have won at Gettysburg?

We have all wondered "what if" about how close that Lee came to winning, or not winning, at Gettysburg. But the value of winning at Gettysburg was not in a military victory, but more a political victory.

Could Lee have won that political "PR" victory by doing things differently?

For example; had Lee, after winning the 1st days Battle on July 1st, and capturing the town of Gettysburg, withdrawn back to Cashtown that night and concentrated his army there and as he left burned the town of Gettysburg to the ground, the morning headlines in the newspapers would have read "Union Army Defeated, town burned". The papers would have gone on to relate the death of General Reynolds and the magnitude of the Union army's losses. The attention getter would have been the smoking ruins of Gettysburg. Every town in the north would have wondered if that would be their fate if the Southern army came their way.

What would the Psyops value of that have been?

The Union Army would have reacted by concentrating at Gettysburg, which they were doing anyway. Because of the defeat of the 1st Day it would have taken 24 to 48 hours for Meade to get his army back into shape. Meade would have been pushed by Lincoln to press after Lee, and would have followed Lee. Where by that time Lee would have been strongly positioned in the mountains and waiting on Meade.

Thereby a second Battle would have most likely occurred and Lee would have been the defender, like Longstreet advised, and would have had the advantage of picking his battleground, most likely in one of the mountain passes. Meade would not have been able in my opinion to refuse battle. And if he did the northern moral would have collapsed.

There may have been a reaction of renewed war spirit in the north. But had Lee won in that second battle, I believe that that would have been short lived and ruins of Gettysburg would have cause the northern people to have forced Lincoln to end the war.

Of course burning towns was not the southern way, but.
