Another common term for these long range shooters, was marksman. Fort Wagner's defense had in its inventory a number of telescopic Whitworth rifles whose expert shooters were hitting Union troops up to at least 1300 yards, according to Union reports. Their primary targets seemed to be those building seige works and setting up artillery positions.
