I thought of this after I posted my last reply, but one interesting usage of the rifle in the War of 1812 was the Battle of New Orleans, Where the frontier rifleman under Gen. Andrew Jackson command were use to advantage because of their longer range ability, but had nothing to do with the ability and accuracy to specifically sight the weapons at an individual targets, as a "Sniper" would do.
