One problem in the Spanish American War was the Spanish had 7mm Mausers using smokeless powder, while most American units had .45-70 Springfields using black powder. Their smoke made fine targets. There were not enough Krag-Jorgensens to go around. In WWI the Marines at Belleau Wood were so effective against the Germans at ranges up to 800 yards they earned their "Devil Dog" sobriquet from the survivors. Stan
