Re: My bloodline holds a grudge!

I have several ancestors that settled in Maine (one even fished there in the late 1590's). From one couple there I am descended 5 ways. At least they show up on my pedigree chart 5 times! Small communities and all. Maybe that explains some things about me! All mine were northerners/Yankees. My wife has about an even split, but hers who were of age to have fought were in East TN and served in Union ranks.
In his letters to his wife, my ancestor Sylvester G. Beckwith of 23rd IA Infantry clearly states he is fighting to preserve the Union, not to free slaves. He was 41 years old at enlistment and was mortally wounded at Big Black River Bridge MS. He was not a man to mince words, and had some choice ones for the Union military leadership!
