"..had called Lake Wales officials to request the city expand the rule about allowing only American flags to be flown on veterans' graves on the traditional patriotic holidays..."
Come on, is it just me! Why do Southerners EVER let anyone get away with stating or implying that Confederate flags are not American flags? Try challenging them to make the reference clear--that they are speaking of U.S. flags, which are no more American than Confederate States flags. At least, in this case, the DAR had good intentions.
I belong to the SAR, SCV and the SRT (Sons of the Republic of Texas). It is tiresome for the SCV to have to spend SO MUCH time and resources on "heritage issues" while the other two have no problem with photo opportunities and public school displays. Fact is, most Americans are just profoundly ignorant of 19th Century history. Not surprising in view of the dismal public education system topped off with 150 years of Northern bias regarding the causes and outcome of the WBTS.
Reminds me of my British history professor (he was Rhodesian), who was puzzled with Americans' bias towards the causes of the American Revolution. He had some very good points, such as the fact that in Britain, only male property owners could vote and only a quarter of the men were property owners. Brits had nothing that resembled Representation in the government, no republic, or even many rights. His arguement was the provocations by the British government towards the American colonists have been exaggerated by American schools.
None of my British relatives or friends ever expressed any bias towards Northerners in the WBTS. Why in the hell should Texas school children not be expected to be proud of their Confederate ancestors unless it is all about PC?
