Edward, Your speculation about the "perceived dishonor" may indeed have been correct. It was unfair. The Confederate forces took a pounding from the Union gun boats at Arkansas Post and they were overran back into the garrison and forced to surrender. They sustained heavy losses in glaring disproportion to the better armed and better led Federal troops. Ultimately, these Texans and other Southerners redeemed themselves in the AoT after doing their time at Camp Douglas and elsewhere. These were damn good soldiers and would have been well received in the ANV if that was their fate.
