As for Lee being President I doubt he would have accepted the idea even if the South had won and he was in good health. I've always felt, and have seen the idea put forth elsewhere, that Judah Benjamin may have followed Davis. Many people think he was the obvious choice.

Imagine a Jew as Confederate President. That idea must be hard for a lot folks to even comprehend :-)
