Pam, that Lee did not approve guerilla operations after Appomattox is probably the best example of his clear thinking, compassion, and, yes, honor. There were a couple of examples during the war, when his blood was up, that Lee intended leading his army directly into battle. The soldiers, recognizing his value, and what his loss would mean, would not advance until Lee returned to the rear. They took hold of Traveler's reins, shouting, "Lee to the rear, Lee to the rear", before they would advance. Once Lee was relatively safe, the army would go into battle.
