I never could find one article that was small enough to post here that explained exactly your point. But basically, all experts agreed, that mounted infantry or mounted rifles, were no match for good mounted cavalry armed with sword or pistol. Whereas cavalry could fight mounted or dismounted, mounted infantry could only fight dismounted. For the cavalry, the horse was an inhancement of his fighting ability, whereas for the mounted infantry, the horse was only transportation.
