David,

It is fascinating that General MacArthur was an avid history reader and his favorite subject was Confederate Military History. More specificaly he was a great admirer of the works of Douglas Freeman and his outstanding biographies of "R.E Lee and Lee's Lieutenants." The latter of which he was reading at the time of the Japanese Invasion of the Philippines in 41. General MacArthur's massive library at his penthouse in the Manila Hotel was of course captured by Generals Homma and Yamashita when the city was abandoned and General MacArthur fled to Corregidor. Unfortunately the library was destroyed by a Japanese Colonel in 45 only minutes before a special combat assault team led by General MacArthur himself recaptured his penthouse at the Hotel. The General was heartbroken and the Japanese Colonel was,"paroled to Buddah" at his front door.
