My great-grandfather was captured near Nashville,Dec 16, 1864 and sent to Camp Douglas. Paroled June 19, 1865 to WALK home in central Alabama. He would not speak of his days at Camp Douglas but told many stories of the generosity of the people along the way to the group of walkers. I do not know how long it took him to walk home

He was blind in his later years, maybe from the extended exposure to the sun at Camp Douglas
