Re: 80 Acres of Hell
In Response To: Re: 80 Acres of Hell ()

Stan, Thank you for your post -

I had two great-grandfathers who walked home from Union prisons
Major John Wesley of the 62nd Alabama Inf. walked to Harpersville Al. from Vicksburg Ms. It is recorded that the slaves that stayed to keep his small children after his wife had died while he was in prison, stopped him and boiled his clothes which was infected with fleas before they would let him see the children

Pvt. Jasper Holcombe, 7th AL Cav. age 18 walked home from Douglas. He would not say much about it to his family about it except that he survived because he weighed 200 pounds and was healthly when he got there. There was a post here about CSA prisoners haveing eye trouble from long exposure to the sun. It seems that Douglas just opened the gates in June 1865 for everyone, sick and lame included, to get home any way they could. I have aways wondered if anyone knows how long it took these men like your kin and mine to walk that distance

Andersonville gets all the bad press, but Douglas was just as bad and no one was hanged for Douglas
The victors get to write the histories in the school books and if it was not for posters like you and all the other experts on this site, the truth would never be known - Ken
