It may have been possible for him to have remained in the Army with an amputation. My GGGrandfather was in the 32nd Alabama. He lost his arm at Murfreesboro and was captured and probably it was his good fortune to be in a Union hospital. They released him 3 months later and he was supposed to go back home. He returned to his unit and was there til the end of the war.
