You're right Stan. I've been rereading some of the "Classics" and find I like them better than I did after reading them the first time or two. We've talked about the impact of photography on the general public who were not exposed to the sights on the battlefield but the letters, journals and other publications from that time give one a very real picture just from words. Of course in those times, there was more patience while reading than there seems to be today. With the use of photographs, the nature of the reporting changed. The letters and journals not only give some pretty phrases, it gives us an idea on how the writer thought. If they took the time to dip the quill and spell out the words, they did have something to say and most times one can get an idea of the thoughts of the day, the fashion, the manners and mannerisms and the weather. We also see the sense of community that is pretty much gone today. They wrote of the fortunes and health of their neighbors and friends. They may have lived in one small area their entire life, but they knew that area and everything that went on in it.
In the journals, we have also seen the fear and dedication to a cause. That's hefty stuff well worth our taking the time to read.
