I just found a new reason for the desertions in the Southern half of Mississippi in 1863-1864. Money. The black market trade between New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast was so lucreative that soldiers were deserting to get into the business of trading with the enemy. I just found this reference to this and it may need more research.
