Trade with the Yankees, in South Mississippi,began early in the war> In one of my grandfathers letters post on the 7th Miss. website, he tells of a fellow caught selling tuenips to the Yankees at Fort Mass., Ship Island. Not sure but I think this "merchant" stretched some rope.
