Re: Jones County...fuzzy history
In Response To: Re: Jones County ()

I read Vikky Bynum's book and it's very detailed, a fact I love. I found many references to my ancestors and one that stuck out so much that I contacted her on facebook to find her reference. From that contact I found out her ties to the same ancestor, James Shows. So we are related. She is from Texas, and I believe her interest in this story is tied to her Shows relations because she was so interested in proving to me that she found that the Jones County Show's were Unionist because of the names they gave their children (after James K. Polk?). Yes, one Shows did desert the Confederate Army sometime after the Battle of Stones River and ended up in a Federal unit, the 1st New Orleans Inf., along with several other Jones County deserters but the majority of the Show's served honorably did not desert, and the Shows' owned slaves.

Anyway, I ask for the reference on information she put in her book on our common ancestor James Shows. It was an obscure entry in the book, I believe in the notes, that James Shows made a claim on damages to him from the Fort Mims Massacre and had made a sworn statement to a judge. That was news to me and I wanted to see what his claim was since I knew at the time of the Fort Mims Massacre James Shows was a minor and two his family was still living in Georgia. {Fort Mims is one of my studies} Vikky gave me the reference but warned me I wouldn't find much detail since it was only a list of names. Then later made it known to me that she was a little embarrassed that she may have left something out or included a mistake in her book. From her reference I found another reference that lead me to the sworn statements. I bought the reference for further study and found that indeed James Shows was listed but after cross referencing the list to the actual statements his name on the list was a transcription spelling error of the name James Short, a man who was in the Fort Mims area, according to census and military records.

Now, I didn't beat her over the head with this mistake, it was forgiveable, and I wanted it to be true, however, it was a detail on her own ancestor that she failed to dig into completely. How many mistakes are there in the rest of her book?
